“Matt devoted his life to fighting for children and working families,” the House Democrats said in a statement, highlighting his deep commitment to his constituents. A cause of death has not been disclosed, though House leadership previously indicated that Gergely suffered a medical issue over the holidays.
Gergely was first elected to represent the 35th District in Allegheny County in 2023 and was reelected in 2024. Before his time in Harrisburg, he spent two decades serving in various community positions in his hometown of McKeesport, building a reputation as a dedicated public servant.
House Divided: 101-101
The unexpected passing of Gergely has left the Pennsylvania House of Representatives deadlocked at a 101-101 partisan split. House Democrats had held a narrow one-seat margin since the last legislative session, a balance that now hangs in limbo until a special election is held in the heavily Democratic Pittsburgh-area district.
Speaker Joanna McClinton (D-Philadelphia) will announce a date for the special election in the coming weeks. “Matt will be desperately missed in Harrisburg, and we know his passing is a tremendous loss to his communities in Western Pennsylvania,” House Democrats added. “Please join us in keeping his wife and family in your thoughts and prayers during this tragic time.”
Flags Lowered Statewide
Governor Josh Shapiro ordered all United States and Commonwealth flags on public buildings, grounds, and facilities across Pennsylvania to be flown at half-staff in honor of Gergely. Flags will remain lowered until sunset on the date of his interment.
“This gesture is a tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving the people of Pennsylvania,” Shapiro’s office said in a release. Residents are encouraged to join in this tribute.
Those who wish to stay informed on flag notifications can sign up through the AlertPA system on the state’s website. The US flags were already at half-staff in honor of Former President Jimmy Carter by order of President Biden.
Remembering a Public Servant
As Pennsylvania mourns, the loss of Representative Gergely leaves a significant void in the state legislature and his community. His legacy of service and advocacy for working families will be remembered as his colleagues and constituents pay their respects in the days to come.
